Live Line Academy Certification Program
The Live Line Academy certification program teaches our most skilled and proven journeyman lineworkers a comprehensive curriculum to build a firm understanding of live-line barehand work. The curriculum and training materials were created in collaboration with nationally recognized leaders in energized line training and safety specialists, and are taught by highly qualified and experienced instructors.
This 10-day certification program at our facility in Alvarado, Texas, combines classroom learning with hands-on practical application in an expansive, dedicated yard, allowing instructors to replicate nearly any type of field condition for energized work on a wide range of transmission and distribution structures. Training situations are completed on energized lines with controlled voltages, simulating real-world scenarios without the danger of electrical shock.
The Live Line Academy is a challenging certification process, and qualified lineworkers who attend the program must comprehend complex electrical theory, perform critical formulas, and demonstrate a strong practical understanding of the work to graduate and earn their barehand certification.
Industry-Leading Live Line Expertise
Our teams are highly trained and experienced in providing energized construction and maintenance services on high-voltage transmission lines and other equipment, enabling them to streamline projects by working on energized lines that don’t need to be taken out of service. This reduces the time and labor required to de-energize and re-energize transmission lines, instead allowing our customers to better allocate those resources elsewhere.
We have expertly handled a wide range of 345kV live line projects across the nation, ranging in size and complexity. By working closely with our customers in an open and trusting partnership, we develop a comprehensive work plan to safely complete our scope of work on time and on budget, without the lost time and labor needed to de-energize lines.
Great Southwestern Construction Performs Important Energized Construction for Customers
Great Southwestern Construcitoin launched its live-line barehand program in 2019 to continue a strong client relationship with Oncor, further servicing the utility’s needs throughout the state. Our first live-line barehand project came near the end of 2019, working on 345kV transmission lines, but the bulk of our work done for the utility is on 138kV lines in West Texas.
Our crews work on energized lines daily, helping Oncor prevent costly outages while simultaneously advancing the careers of lineworkers over the years in the process.
